Playreading: The King and Queen of Auckland

  • The Dust Palace Charitable Trust 134 Main Highway Auckland, Auckland 1051 New Zealand (map)

Join playwright Edward Clendon for a very informal reading of one act play, The King and Queen of Auckland.

Al and Clytemnestra, the last man and woman in Tamaki Makaurau/Auckland, meet once a month atop Maungawhau.

Al wants pills (he's used up all the pharmacies on his side). Clytemnestra wants booze (she's used up all the liquor stores on her's). Oh, and the human race, Clytemnestra thinks they should continue the human race.

This 35 minute play explores themes of isolation in the modern world, our generations struggle for connection (particularly in the cultural wasteland and dislocated suburbs of Tamaki Makaurau), the absurdity of whether or not to ‘have babies’, the predicament of the millennial narcissist, and the pain of lack of meaning.

Edward Clendon is a circus performer, stuntman, actor and playwright based in Tamaki Makaurau. His first full length text-based play 'MARY' was picked up for licensing by Theatrical Rights Worldwide in 2026 and short-listed for the New Zealand Play of the Year awards. As a writer, Edward loves to dwell in the high camp and the absurd.
